York Town UB Church Hurricane Damaged Roof
The roof of the York Town United Brethren Church in Jamaica was first destroyed by Hurricane Dean in 2007. In 2008, the congregation began re-roofing the building, but less than half the work has been completed and they've exhausted their resources. Pastor Leroy Martin and his congregation are requesting assistance.
Estimated amount needed: $45,000
Summer Camp 2009
Camp operates for three weeks starting from the last Saturday in July and ending in August. It caters to approximately 270 campers. The camp fees have always been subsidized by the Conference because we had the privilege of our own accommodations. However, with the recent condemning of the board building which is slated to be demolished, we had to seek additional accommodations which has caused a dramatic increase of the fees. We do not want any camper to be denied the opprtunity of this experience which can transform the lives of our youth. They then return to their churches where they are further nurtured and developed into effective servants of God.
Needed: any amount you can give
Update on Camp Project at Malvern
In 1973, the United Brethren began to develop their own camp site at Lyndiver, Malvern. Since its beginning, thousands of young people have benefitted greatly from attending these annual camps. In additon to camping, the facilities have been used for the annual conference business sessions, the Women's Missionary fellowship twice yearly Prayer Retret, the Masters Men International annual Retreat and other local church retreats. From time to time the facilities are rented to other denominations, thus providing additional income. In 2004, it was discovered that part of the land that the church manse was built on and that was slated for expansion of the camp dormitories was indeed owned by the neighbors. Continued efforts to find an amicable solution have proved unsuccessful. In the interest of good Christian testimony, and to prevent the continued stalling of the development of the campsite, we must settle the matter by paying $20,000 US Dollars. However, the Jamaican church does not currently have these funds. Plans for expansion of the Malvern camp site cannot proceed until the land issue is finally settled.
Jamaica Conference is hereby asking for our assistance in raising this $20,000.
Iterboreale Land Purchase
Rev. Winston Smith sends the following request:
The Iterboreale ministry began in the latter half of 2002 by Rev. Norbert Shaw ably assisted by some of our churches in the Eastern District of the Conference. The work evolved into a growing congregation and was organized in March 2007. Presently there are twenty four (24) members, twelve males and twelve females (the majority being young people with only two members over sixty (60) years old).
It is the first UB church in the parish of St. Mary and is strategically located approximately 23 miles from Kingston, the capital of Jamaica. It runs along the North Coast, a prime tourist area.
The church building is erected on property close to the new high-way, just two (2) miles from a booming town and other developing communities with a breathe taking view of the sea.
The community of Iterboreale is made up of both lower and middle income people with a high unemployment rate.
The purpose of the church is to offer a wholistic ministry to the community. The strategies being employed are:
(1) Evangelism and Discipleship
(2) Skills Training
(3) Educational
(4) Social Care
The Iterboreale church is pastored by Rev. Norbert Shaw and christian worker Ms June Scott.
Our five-year lease expires in October 2008. At this time it is imperative that we make a down payment. Failure to do so within a month's time will result in the possibility of us losing a congegation and the money that has been spent on the building. Lands are hard to locate and they are very expensive. Therefore, we are soliciting your financial support in this urgent need.
Your in His service

Amount needed: $14,850 US Dollars
Battersea Parsonage Project
The Battersea UBC parsonage was begun in 1999. Two work teams have assisted since then. Another team is planning to go in January 2009. The congregation is trying to raise money toward the project
Amount needed: $11,150
Roof Replacement on Conference Superintendent's Parsonage
Rev. Winston Smith of the Jamaica Conference requests assistance in replacing the roof of the superintendent's parsonage. A local contractor provided an estimate of $6800 to replace the trusses, ceilings and corrugated steel. However, we believe a work team would be able to take on the task. Plans are to do the work during the month of January and we are looking for a team leader to coordinate the project. Donations would also be welcomed.
Golden Spring Early Childhood Learning Centre Expansion
Equipment (such as chairs, tables, fire equipment, etc.) is needed to help the Golden Spring Early Childhood Learning Centre expand its ministries to children.
Cost: $4400 As of August 2008, $3000 has been given.
Update on Camp Project
Jamaica Conference continues their preparation for their large camp project at Malvern. A wooden dormitory has become dangerous for continued use, and they desire to replace it with a block structure. The first step is to put in the foundation for this building with a cost of approximately $14,000. After the foundation is put in, they hope to have some partnering groups from North America to help construct the building.
If you or your church has the ability to assist them with getting the foundation started, it would be a great blessing to the conference and the work of the camp. Gifts can be sent to Global Ministries designated for “Malvern Camp”.
