Macau
The vision of the Hong Kong Conference, led to the opening of a new work in Macau, a Portuguese colony, in 1987. Seeing the opportunity for outreach in Macau, just one hour away by ferry, the Hong Kong church proposed opening of a new mission field.
It was a partnership between Hong Kong Conference and UB missions in North America. The Luke Fetters family and the Phil Burkett family were appointed from North America, while Carol and Cannie Chan were appointed from Hong Kong.
Over time a successful English Language Program was developed which is now located in the Taipa area, and many, many personal and spiritual contacts have been made though it.
We also have established two churches, Living Water and Living Stone. Living Water Church (the first UB church in Macau) is pastored by Karis Wong, a woman native to Macau and graduate of Macau Bible Institute. Living Stone is a church plant, and is developing well. Rev. Carlson Becker, a UB missionary, is working with a Chinese co-worker, Michael Chan, overseeing this new congregation.
Part of the missionary team in Macau focuses their attention on the English Language Program. Others, like David and Melissa Kline, teach English and interact with young people at Pui Va High School.
The ELP has attracted secretaries, bankers, teachers, government workers, doctors, engineers, nurses, factory workers, casino workers and persons from many other occupations. The gospel is shared within the context of the program, and students are invited to take further steps, as they are willing.
The Macau churches operate under the supervison of Hong Kong Conference. The US National Conference is a major partner in this work, providing funding and personnel.
Macau is changing rapidly, and has become a gambling mecca. Macau now takes in more gambling revenue than any other location in the world, including Las Vegas.
