Recommended Books

From Jerusalem to Irian Jaya: A Biographical History of Christian Missions by Ruth Tucker
Still the definitive overview of evangelical missions, what Ralph Winter has called "the most moving book ever written." See also her excellent Guardians of the Great Commission: The Story of Women in Modern Missions.

You Can Make a Difference, parts 1 and 2
These delightful books give kids plenty of atlas-type information, fun stuff to know and care about and something to pray about for a whole year. Excellent, and highly, highly recommended for home use and church libraries and mission resource shelves.

Building Bridges: Christianity and Islam by Fouad Elias Accad
One of the many books on this topic, it is particularly interesting for evangelical outreach that is sensitively contextualized. Highly recommended.

Understanding Spiritual Power: A Forgotten Dimension of Cross-Cultural Mission and Ministry by Marguerite Kraft
This Orbis Press book reminds us that Westerners have a very different approach to spiritual forces than most people in the world. Kraft tells of her work among the Kamwe in Nigeria, the Thai in Asia and the Navajo in North America. She shows how the people in these three societies view reality and suggests how the gospel can be articulated in forms they can appreciate and understand.

bookmindfor missionsA Mind for Missions: 10 Ways to Build Your World Vision by Paul Borthwick One of our favorite recommendations for one who asks "where do I begin?" His more recent, foundational book, Six Dangerous Questions, is tremendous, rooting our view of the globe and the nations more deeply in our basic worldview. This is dynamite stuff!

Missions in the 21st Century: Getting Your Church into the Game
by Tom Telford
What a fun idea--Telford used to be a pro baseball umpire and he uses that as a metaphor for getting a church "into the game." He calls 'em as he sees 'em here, and nearly every church could benefit from his practical ideas. He really knows his stuff!

Tbookworldatdoorhe World at Your Door: Reaching International Students in Your Home, Church and School by Dr. Tom Phillips
What a great idea! Match this with the important Reaching the World by Thom and Marcia Hopler, one of the great mission books of all time, and you will soon be building friendships with ethnic folks right in your own area.

Concerts of Prayer by David Bryant
How Christians can join together to pray for spiritual awakening and world evangelization. Very practical guide that can be put to use at home and abroad.

Loving the Church, Blessing the Nations, by George MileyLoving the Church...
Traveling to foreign lands and relating to people of other cultures is no longer restricted to missionaries and mission agencies. There is no better time for local churches to rediscover the role God intended for them to serve as centers of mission vision and implementation.

This book walks the reader through the biblical basis for mission, the history of the local church’s involvement and need to identify “apostolic” gifting in our day and age. This is essential reading for every pastor and every mission commission leader.

Building Strategic Relationships, by Daniel RickettBuilding Strategic Relationships...
Partnering with a local church or national conference sounds like a great idea, but what happens when the “romance” is over and reality takes over. Relationships take a lot of work and often what partners consider helpful can actually hinder the work of God.

This is a very practical book, full of checklists and practical suggestions. The author begins with values, and a discussion of dependency, giving, receiving and accountability dominates a good portion of the rest of the book. If you are, or are considering a partnership with an overseas leader or church, this book is absolutely indispensible.

Send Me: Your Journey to the Nations, by Steve Hoke and Bill Taylor
Have you wondered if God might be calling you into missions service? This would be an excellent workbook for you to work through in discerning God's will.

Before You Pack Your Bag, Prepare Your Heart, by Cindy Judge.
This short-term mission preparation guide includes 12 Bible studies plus a trip journal.

Short-Term Missions Workbook: From Mission Tourists to Global Citizens by Tim Dearborn
An eight week course for teams to do together as spiritual preparation before a cross-cultural mission trip.

Sunday School Resources

Following are three excellent resources that could be used as a Sunday School Elective course about missions.

Operation WorldView. Perspectives is an extensive mission training opportunity for pastor's and lay people (see www.perspectives.org). However curriculum has become available to replicate some of that experience in a shorter time and in a small group format, such as Sunday School. Go to the following website for details: http://www.mission1.org/opwv.html

God's Heart for the Nations. by Jeff Lewis
A Bible Study in eight lessons that rips apart the old, traditional understandings of God's plan and purpose for our lives.
For details go to: http://www.calebproject.org/store

Eternal Impact: Discover Your Role in God's Worldwide Purpose. In an attempt to equip church leaders seeking a unified local and worldwide outreach, Caleb Project has produced a unique 10-week small-group study for adults.
Find it at http://www.calebproject.org/store

Training Resources

CultureLink provides the training needed for short-term team leaders to effectively plan, prepare and lead volunteer teams. Find a Mission Team Leadership Training seminar led by Jeff Bleijerveld being held in your area.

"Stuff IV" is the fourth volume of an encyclopedia of all the things you wanted to know about doing missions but didn't know where to find. It is a compilation of one-page concepts, lists, outlines, forms, samples, and resources covering everything from becoming a World Christian to Missions Web Sites.

More than 6000 copies of volumes 1, 2, and/or 3 have been distributed. It is certainly one of the best resources available to churches and individuals involved in missions. (“Stuff” is available only on CD in Microsoft Word.)

Purchase all four volumes with cumulative index ($26) or just the fourth volume ($12). For more information and to order go to www.davidmays.org or call 317-852-0348.

Photos and Powerpoint Slides

Global Ministries has prepared Photos and PowerPoint slides for nearly all of our missionaries and national leaders, as well as other slides related to UB missions.

This page contains downloadable photos--from 72 dpi to high-resolution 225 dpi--of most of our missionaries.

Many UB churches use an "announcement loop" prior to services. They show slides with information and announcements about church events, similar to the slides typically shown in theaters before the movie. The following slides can be added to the mix to help people get acquainted with our missionaries and our international work in general. You can download them from the website.
