2004 WMF Project: Shoes for Missions
Donna Hollopeter
Associate Director of Global Ministries
In 2003, the Women's Missionary Fellowship chose as its project
for the year the collection of shoes for Haiti. When I was in Haiti,
many people asked for a pair of shoes. Our team gave all we could
give, but we just didn't have enough. Shoes are a precious commodity
in Haiti.
I also saw the need for shoes in Honduras. A child came to the
medical clinic last June in La Pradera complaining of difficulty
walking. We asked him to take off his shoes and found that the
shoes were so small that his toes were curled under and huge blisters
were on the top of his feet. We gave him shoes that fit him, along
with socks. He walked around barefooted, carrying the shoes and
socks and grinning ear to ear as he showed everyone his new acquisitions.
Two days later, he came to where we were working to show us that
he was wearing his shoes and socks and that he was walking just
fine.
The WMF ladies responded so well that we were able to send shoes
not only to Haiti, but also to Honduras and Sierra Leone. A huge
"Thanks!" needs
to be extended to the women and churches, and also to King Lumber
Company in Logan, Ohio, which collected three pallets full of boxes
of shoes. Even something like a pair of shoes can make a big difference
in someone's life.
